Common Soap questions:

What kind of colorants do you use in your soap?

I use mineral colorants (oxides, ultramarines), herbs and clays. I do not use FC&C colorants in my soap. My mineral colorants are lab created instead of mined to ensure they are not contaminated with heavy metals.

Is your soap "lye soap"?

Yes, my soap is lye soap; however, the name is a misnomer. Once a soap is made, saponification is complete within 24-48 hours and no lye remains – it has all converted into soap. My soaps are superfatted (ie: extra fat is added for skin conditioning benefits) at 5% to guarantee no unconverted lye remains. All true soap is “lye soap.” Many store bought soaps are actually detergent-based cleansers or are soap that has often had its naturally-occuring glycerin stripped from it in the manufacturing process.

Why don't you use palm oil?

While palm oil is a fantastic ingredient in soaps for its hardening and lathering properties, there has been much controversy because growing palm trees as a crop often displaces wild life and rainforests are burned and clear cut to create areas to grow them. And, while, certified sustainable palm oil does exist, there are still concerns.

Why do you use Phthalate-free fragrance oils?

There is concern that phthalates can have negative effects on a person’s health; that is why I strictly use either essential oils, which are natural, or phthalate-free fragrance oils. The reason I do use fragrance oils is because not all scents can be found in essential oils. For example, there is no such thing as strawberry essential oil.
